FSC Design Award 2012.
A lounge chair in FSC-certified wood.

The production of the lounge chair involves all residents in the village where the FSC-certified sawmill is located. The women from the village can crochet the designed rug while the men cuts the wood at the sawmill, and thereby contribute to the village’s furniture production. The rug increases the chair’s seating comfort, while creating a contrast between the hard wood and soft yarn.

The chair can be produced in many different types of hardwood that will give many different expressions. Thereby giving focus to the many FSC certified woods available, and encourages a sustainable discussion and attitude.

In addition, a simple change of the color on the rug leads to a new variation and expression of the chair.

The chair is very production friendly. It can be flatpacked and takes up a minimum of space during transport. The packaging measures exactly one half of a europe pallet, and it is thereby easy to stack and transport in a container.

In addition, all parts of the chair consist of wood with the same dimensions (50×25mm) and are only joined together by dowels and glue.

The rug can be arranged in four different ways on the chair, due to the single armrest, see photos, thereby making it easy to fit your seating needs.

Every year, millions of tons of textiles ends up in landfills. Textiles from clothing rejected by retailers because of flaws or they’ve missed the season. Leftovers after cutting a shirt-pattern.

In the US alone, almost 11 million tonnes of textiles ends up in landfill, every year.

The Offcut Pouf is made from offcuts of new fashion garments. It consists of a high quality cotton wire, made from connected strings of textiles. The pattern is crochetted by hand, making every pouf unique. It is filled with hard foam, which makes the pouf ideal to use as an extra seat or to rest your feet on.

The pouf has leather on the buttom side to make it more resistant during use.
The story of where the offcuts come from is engraved into the leather.

Balance Float is made in collaboration with Line Feldfos as a designproposition to “Dan Hill Plast Competition 2011/12″.

“Balance float” is an educational toy for use in water, and can be used by 1 – 4 people. Balance Float is rotationally molded in hardwearing vinyl, and the design consists of a sphere and a visually continuous cylinder.

technical data
Material: Soft, but durable vinyl
Thickness: 3-5 mm (no welds)
Cylinder: radius 100 mm
Sphere: radius 400mm
Total length: 1600mm
Color: Blue, red and orange

Examples of 3 different gameplays:

Last man standing
Can you get your opponent to fall into the water without falling in yourself?
1-2 players sit at opposite ends of the Balance Float. While trying to remain seated, the players try to tilt the other participant. The first player to fall into the water has lost (2 or 4 participants).

The Conqueror
Be the first to sit on the cylinder and rule the Balance Float by placing both hands on the opponent’s side of the ball.
The players try to get up on the Balance Float, but the float rotates around itself and it is hard to hold on.
– so who has what it takes to conquer the ‘balance float’?

An obstacle course
Combine Balance Float with other floating toys and attempt to cross the obstacle course. Move from end to end on Balance Float by forcing the ball to reach the opposite end – without falling into the water!
Is it possible to succeed?

Give your baby a sustainable start
A series of toys and a Baby Gym in FSC-certified wood.

THE CONCEPT:
The toys are composed of many different species of wood. As an alternative to cheap plastic toys and painted, artificial colors, the wood species creates the compositions of contrasting colors and simple patterns that the newborn baby can see.

Additionally, the toys brings the different FSC-certified woods from Tanzania into focus, and encourages to sustainable debates from the beginning. The specific selection of wood is not predetermined (it is possible to use the wood you have available) as long as the wood has different colours. I have used ash, oak and maghogny in my prototypes.

All wood is treated with neutral vaseline oil, and can therefore be mouthed by your baby.

Reaching out for toys stimulates the baby’s development of eye-hand coordination.

The wood species creates the compositions of contrasting colors and simple patterns that the newborn baby can see, which stimulates the baby’s sight.

The Baby Gym can be flatpacked.

Layout: A project about influencing and informing the future "konfirmanter" about the possibility of celebrating "Blue Monday" in Aarhus. The project combines the layout of a poster, an information booklet and a map to the youngsters.

Layout
A project about influencing and informing the future “konfirmanter” about the possibility of celebrating “Blue Monday” in Aarhus. The project combines the layout of a poster, an information booklet and a map to the youngsters.

Formulation of the problem
When the candidates for confirmation are going to choose how to enjoy themselves on their Blue Monday it happens about half a year before it actually takes place. Many classes in Jutland can choose between Aarhus, Aalborg or a visit to an action park. The pupils have to search for information about the possibilities. Not until they choose Aarhus, get into contact with City-Aarhus, they have the booklet “Blue Monday in Aarhus” sent to their addresses. The booklet has many fantastic suggestions for celebrating a Blue Monday in Aarhus and the City Association would like to send the booklet to all the candidates – but this is not an economical possibility.

Description of the solution
We want to influence and inform the candidates for confirmation about Aarhus as the right place to choose. This can be done in many ways. We want to make a poster which can be placed in the school canteen. In this way the pupils can be aware of the fact that Aarhus is the place where their Monday off will be just great! Finally the layout for the poster, the booklet and the following map should be the same, to combine the three kinds of information.

The publication “Creative Industries” explores the tensions in the creative environments in Aarhus – from emerging small entrepreneurs, to large international business successes.

The study gives an insight in the potential of the city, and statements from the local creatives on how to make Aarhus a better and more creative city.

Subsequently, it was handed to the mayor, the alderman at Culture- and Community service center, the City Architect in Aarhus, and the project manager at “Aarhus 2017″.

The publication is a cooperation between the students at Studio Design.

The lamp is made for the "Think Twice, Think Human" Exhibition at Copenhagen Design Week 2011.
The lamp is a way to re-use a deck of playing cards where one card is missing, instead of throwing the remaining cards out.

The lamp is made for the Think Twice Exhibition at Copenhagen Design Week 2011.

Think Twice description: “How can we recycle materiales in new pieces of furniture? 27 suggestions from Kolding School of Design and Aarhus School of Architecture participate in the exhibition – and competition – with furniture made of materials from another production, from an old product or from packaging materials.”

We all know the frustration when a single card in a deck of playing cards is missing. Most card games require that all 52 cards are present, and it is impossible to make or replace the missing cards yourself – it will easily be identified. If one card is missing, there is often nothing else to do but throwing the rest out or buying a new deck – despite the fact that the remaining 51 cards basically are all right.

If you combine the remaining cards with a socket from an old, unwanted lamp, you have developed a new ceiling light with a different and personalized lamp shade. The composition of the lamp shade symbolizes a house of cards – and the cards can be placed in several different ways, giving the lamp many different expressions.

When You buy a fancy bed, it is often difficult to find a bedside table to match the design of the bed. The SideTable Bed integrates a bedside table with the layout of the legs, making it a part of the design.
